In some cases, you may have to pay the treatment costs yourself. If so, have the doctor issue you a detailed invoice showing the treatments and other measures provided.

More details

If you want to have your expenses reimbursed while you are still abroad, you can present the invoice to the foreign health insurance provider together with your European Health Insurance Card.

If you prefer not to do this, TK can calculate the amount you will be refunded after your holiday. Your expenses will then be reimbursed at the statutory rates valid in Germany or your destination country.

There are various ways in which you can send us your invoices.

The easiest is to use our online app  Reimbursement treatment abroad  (only available in German currently).

Alternatively, you can send us

  • the original invoices and receipts for the treatment costs
  • original prescriptions for medication, treatments and similar
  • if the total invoice amount exceeds 500 EUR, proof of payment such as invoice receipts, till receipts or bank statements

Send your proofs of payment to the following address (no street or house number necessary) together with the form "Treatment abroad":

Techniker Krankenkasse
20905 Hamburg

Please note that entitlements to social benefits expire four years after the end of the calendar year in which they arose. This means that invoices for treatment abroad from 2019 may no longer be reimbursed after 31 December 2023.
